Our environmentally friendly farm was established in
2003.
We have a 4,000 square foot greenhouse with 14,000 gallons
of fish culture and 3,000 square feet of field in a multi-tiered
layout.
Growing the healthiest and highest quality food truly
sustainably in balance with nature were the first principals
of building the Laughing Duck Farm's unique greenhouse
and growing systems. 14,000 gallons of fish culture tanks
raising healthy Tilapia in the absence of any antibiotics,
hormones or dangerous heavy metals and PCBs provides the
highest quality safe fish and nutrient rich water to naturally
feed the plants. Passing through a natural filtration
system, the fish waste is removed and the water cleaned
by billions of microorganisms as occurs naturally in every
stream, river, lake and pond. This rich water then flows
through the plant growing trays delivering a perfect blend
of plant food with no need to add anything. The plants
purify the water further before it returns to the fish
tanks. A complete and harmonious ecosystem creates the
freshest, healthiest, most flavorful fish and greens possible.
Locating Laughing Duck Farm's greenhouse on the beautiful
Boquet River Falls allows us to draw from local hydropower.
Most of our heat is provided by solar hot water collectors
backed up by an efficient wood boiler. This allows us
to grow all winter long, supplementing heat and light
for optimal growth with no negative impact on the environment.
This is how we make a difference. Sustainably grow the
freshest, healthiest, best tasting foods for our local
market and openly share our experiences with others.
Farm History:
Eve and Don have been gardening for many years using only
sustainable organic practices, growing the majority of
their own food and sharing with family, friends and neighbors.
Desiring to have fresh vegetables year round, we have
built our own greenhouse and enjoyed fresh salads, vegetables
and tomatoes even in January. More and more interest in
greenhouse technology and permaculture practices lead
us to incorporate fish into our system with great success.
Years of success led us to design and develop the ideal,
sustainable year-round growing system that is now Laughing
Duck Farm. We now employ 6 people plus ourselves. We regularly
entertain local schools, 4-H groups, other interested
farmers, university researchers and anyone interested
in learning more about Aquaponics and its unique ability
to produce the freshest, highest quality food sustainably
year round.
