No
pesticides or herbicides have been used on this land for
at least 30 years. Livestock are raised without steroids
or hormones and antibiotics are used only when necessary
to treat a specific health problem. Cattle may be entirely
grassfed (plus a mineral mix) or grained as customers
desire. Grain and hay are obtained from a local farmer
specializing in providing feed grown with minimal pesticides
and herbicides.
Belted Galloways are an extremely hardy rare breed
developed in Scotland. See www.beltie.org
for their history and characteristics. They have a double
hair coat, develop less of a fat layer, are lower in cholesterol
and beneficial levels omega 6 and omega 3 acids when compared
to other breeds (www.
Beltie.org/beef3.html). And, these health benefits
are increased by grassfeeding
(www.csuchico.edu/agr/grsfdbef/Sites/Health%20Benefits.htm
).
Just as important:
"The USDA Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) at
Clay Center, Nebraska conducted extensive testing of multiple
beef animal traits during the period of 1986 to 1990.
The results of the overall study indicated that no one
breed excelled in all of the traits important to the beef
industry; that each breed may contribute different and
potentially valuable genetics. What the research did reveal
was that the Galloway excelled in the beef quality trait
areas of Flavor and Juiciness ... meaning that Galloway
beef ranked first in taste. This outcome is of significant
importance in itself."
Beef
is USDA inspected, vacuum packed and currently available
by the piece or bulk throughout the year. Goat is available
if sufficient notice is given. Marketing has been entirely
by word of mouth. The farm is growing and stable relationships
with new customers are now being sought to utilize the
high quality product we provide. Customer needs are critical
and we will work with meat processors to customize the
product and to time its availability to meet specific
needs.
We welcome questions and visits to the farm. We will
also be glad to provide samples and customer references.
